Digitization of Library of Congress Uncovers Lost Kubrick Early Photos

Few people know that before he started making movies, Stanley Kubrick was a star photojournalist. Six weeks after graduating from high school, Kubrick went to work for Look magazine the way other kids went to college. The Kubrick-Kupcinet story, "Chicago City of Contrasts," ran five pages, and included 11 pictures. Plenty of landmarks are here: State Street at night, dinner at the Pump Room, a South Side kitchen full of kids, a cheerful stripper in the middle of her act, a jazz club, a boxing match, the floor of the stock exchange, sleek commuter trains standing in the station, a bum eating lunch alone in a rubble-filled lot on the West Side. Kubrick shot 40 rolls of film. What happened to the other photographs? We don't need to wonder. Almost all of Look's picture files -- approximately 5 million images in the form of negatives, proof sheets and prints -- were donated to the Library of Congress in 1971, just after the magazine folded. There they remained, uncataloged, inaccessible to the public. In the mid-1990s, Congress allocated funds for the Look cataloging project, the material was opened to the public about 2001, and a user-friendly finding aid went up on the Library of Congress Web site within the last six months... The Dark Side of the Chip?

Apple to Use Intel Microprocessors Beginning in 2006 Ask yourself a few questions: 1. How many platforms was WINNT ever ported to? - 4: i386, Alpha, MIPS, PowerPC 2. How many paltforms run BSD? - Countless, almost every thing with a chip inside 3. Is it harder to port to another chip within MacOS X than to port from OS 9 to OS X? - I barely remember there's a thingy on this planet, namely COMPILERS. 4. Why do you love Apple? for the chip logo, or for the OS, apps & design? 5. Is Intel chips THAT bad?

End of Nikon Full Frame DSLR: Kodak confirm SLR/n and SLR/c discontinued

DPREVIEW - Kodak has today confirmed that the DCS Pro SLR/n and DCS Pro SLR/c digital SLRs have been discontinued and will no longer be manufacturered. In our conversation with Kodak Pro we were assured that existing owners will continue to be supported through 2008 and that this will include firmware and Photodesk updates if required. Kodak will continue to develop CCD and CMOS image sensors and this announcement does not affect their consumer digital cameras. Kodak was keen to stress that this does not mark the end of Kodak digital SLR's but that they wished to concentrate on market segments which are more profitable.

Firefox's SwitchProxy

from http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2005/04/firefoxs-switchproxy-news.html Anonymous Proxy Lists on Jeremy's Mozilla Extensions Forum News.com reports that RoundTwo -- formerly known as MozSource -- has re-dedicated itself to building Firefox extensions. Their contention is that the same users flocking to Firefox in droves will also be looking for safe and reliable products to enhance the Firefox experience. They are thinking of products like SwitchProxy, which allows you to select and choose from a list of a variety of web proxies. The proxies can provide (but certainly don't guarantee) a level of anonymity for surfers by adding a layer of indirection to your surfing. The web server you're visiting, for instance, will record the IP address of the proxy... and not your IP. Ah, but where to find anonymous proxies? The MozMonkey Forum has a lengthy thread discussing this very topic. For your viewing pleasure, I've coalesced some of the lists mentioned. In addition, there are tools like the ProxyTester, which will examine lists of proxies and let you know the ones that are still alive and kicking. And, of course there are tools to test the anonymity services provided by these proxies: ProxyJudge and Anonymizer's Privacy Tester may fit the bill. In any event, use these lists at your own risk - they are culled from MozMonkey and have not been checked or examined in any depth. The onus is on you to determine suitability and applicability to your particular web surfing requirements. Nuff said. http://www.stayinvisible.com/index.pl/proxy_list http://www.steganos.com/?area=updateproxylist http://abcdelasecurite.free.fr/html/modules.php?op=modload http://www.geocities.com/nothing75487548/proxy.txt http://www.geocities.com/switchproxylist/ http://www.aliveproxy.com/socks5-list/ http://free-proxy-servers.com/ http://anoniem-surfen.eigenstart.nl/ http://www.geocities.com/switchproxylist/massive.txt http://www.multiproxy.org/anon_proxy.htm http://www.i-hacked.com/.../Finding-and-Using-Anonymous-Proxies-9.html News.com: Start-up wants to improve on Firefox

Netscape 8 Released

It seems they are claiming Firefox nightlies are outdated, which is amusing since Netscape 8 is vulnerable to an exploit fixed in Firefox 1.0.4. And 8.0.1 is out right after. Wired 13.05: The Wired 40

They're masters of technology and innovation. They're global thinkers driven by strategic vision. They're nimbler than Martha Stewart's PR team. They're The Wired 40. 10. EBAY The Buyer's Seller's Market Last year: 5 Once the world's biggest yard sale, eBay has become the epitome of ecommerce: a global marketplace responsible last year for $34.2 billion worth of auctions and fixed-price sales. With no inventory costs, eBay generates net margins of 24 percent. Meanwhile, the company's PayPal division is becoming the standard for online payments. With 56 million active users, eBay has a big say in what gets sold online and how we pay for it. Challenge: Stop taking sellers for granted. After recent fee increases, 7,000 eBay stores closed. Opportunity: China. EBay must do better there than it did in Japan, where it got spanked by Yahoo! in 2001 and beat a retreat.

4 Years

Today among a gang of formal Yifei employees I went to he's house and paid homeage to Chen. Today is the very birthday of Chen. People sang the birthday song to Chen in tears. The day he passed away, was the 4th anniversary of my first meeting my wife at Yifei HQ at Summit Center. Yifei HQ at Summit Center was officially operational on April 9th, 2001.

Yifei Chen: A kind man with his big vision

Despite all criticisms as an entrepreneur and a boss, Chen has an artist's faith to build a world of vision. As the man who headed my first job, he gave full trust, opportunity, support and credit to people like me, my wife and people who became top designs years later. Chen recruited a few guys from SJTU to build yifei.com in late 1998. This job turned a CS novice into a senior engineer in the Internet industry who later worked at Microsoft and eBay. A KPMG secretary went to job interview for Chen's secretary in 2001, but was recruited as an editor of yifei.com and soon a feature editor of Vision Magzine. Chen sent these rookies abroad for National-Geography-like missions to build them up. She is working for Vogue now. With all respect, R.I.P., Chen.

Google Gulp

From FAQ:
Q: Well, shouldn't Auto-Drink™ be default-off? A: You mean we should cripple a perfectly useful feature just because of a little bad PR?
At Google our mission is to organize the world's information and make it useful and accessible to our users. But any piece of information's usefulness derives, to a depressing degree, from the cognitive ability of the user who's using it. That's why we're pleased to announce Google Gulp (BETA)™ with Auto-Drink™ (LIMITED RELEASE), a line of "smart drinks" designed to maximize your surfing efficiency by making you more intelligent, and less thirsty. Think fruity. Think refreshing. Think a DNA scanner embedded in the lip of your bottle reading all 3 gigabytes of your base pair genetic data in a fraction of a second, fine-tuning your individual hormonal cocktail in real time using our patented Auto-Drink™ technology, and slamming a truckload of electrolytic neurotransmitter smart-drug stimulants past the blood-brain barrier to achieve maximum optimization of your soon-to-be-grateful cerebral cortex. Plus, it's low in carbs! And with flavors ranging from Beta Carroty to Glutamate Grape, you'll never run out of ways to quench your thirst for knowledge. How to get Gulped? You can pick up your own supply of this "limited release" product simply by turning in a used Gulp Cap at your local grocery store. How to get a Gulp Cap? Well, if you know someone who's already been "gulped," they can give you one. And if you don't know anyone who can give you one, don't worry – that just means you aren't cool. But very, very (very!) soon, you will be. Learn more: From forest to freezer : history 4 great flavors : product details Frequently asked questions
